## Summary

Trevor Wishart's political allegory in musique concrète. Using complex editing, he built a world where human speech and industrial noises clash and transform into one another.

## Full text

*Red Bird: A Political Prisoner's Dream* is a massive 45-minute work exploring the boundaries of sonic symbolism. Wishart rejected abstraction in favor of recognizable images: voices, birds, mechanisms, and animals. The innovation lay in how these sounds interact. Instead of the usual collage technique (abrupt changes), the composer achieved an effect of 'liquid metamorphosis,' where the structure of one sound is gradually replaced by the structure of another — all achieved manually on magnetic tape.

Narratively, the piece is a journey of a political prisoner through landscapes of captivity (factory, prison, court) toward images of nature. Wishart structured the material with mathematical precision, categorizing sounds into 'open' and 'closed' types. With this work, he proved that composition with recorded sound can possess the same deep dramaturgy and developmental logic as a classical symphony.
