## Summary

In the late 1930s, Bell Labs engineer Homer Dudley was researching telephone signal compression but ultimately gave machines a voice. His Voder (1939) synthesized speech without vocal cords. The instrument demanded brutal coordination: a specially trained operator smoothly combined electronic vibrations using a foot pedal and continuous-response wrist bars.

Its automated sibling was the Vocoder—a sound analysis and resynthesis system for copper telephone lines. It measured voice energy using narrow-band filters and recreated it with tone generators and white noise. In music, this method of cross-synthesis made synthesizers talk: the machine extracts the amplitude envelope from a microphone signal and maps it onto an electronic chord. This is exactly how the Moog Modular eerily sang in Wendy Carlos’s soundtrack for A Clockwork Orange (1971), and how Alvin Lucier turned a live chorus into an abstraction in North American Time Capsule (1967). French composer Philippe Manoury, in his massive piece Pluton (1988), used the algorithm to cross-synthesize completely alien objects, blending a piano chord with a powerful tam-tam hit.

An engineering utility accidentally triggered the European avant-garde. The introduction of the Vocoder to acoustician Werner Meyer-Eppler in 1948 led to the creation of the legendary WDR studio in Cologne and the birth of Elektronische Musik. By the late 1970s, commercial models from Moog, Korg, and Roland had taken over the industry, and the analog principle itself was reborn as the digital phase vocoder (FFT). This algorithm gave composers absolute power over time and pitch, allowing Trevor Wishart in his piece Vox-5 (1986) to seamlessly melt a human voice into the roar of a crowd, neighing horses, chiming bells, and a swarm of bees.
