# Spatial Audio (2020)

Ideas · https://nodemusic.cc/node/spatial

## Summary

Sound gained volume. Technologies like Dolby Atmos returned the ideas of Varèse and Stockhausen to the mass market. Now spatial music is available to everyone in headphones.

## Full text

Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio brought object-based sound to the masses. Now the sound engineer places sound objects in 3D space. The processor itself decides how to reproduce this in your headphones.

With head tracking technology, sound becomes physically fixed in space: you can turn your back to a virtual sound source. This realizes the dreams of the 50s avant-gardists about spatial music, but now it is available to everyone.

## People

- Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928–2007) — German composer.
- Edgard Varèse (1883–1965) — French-American composer.
