The commercial release of Max by Opcode brought the program out of scientific labs to ordinary Macintosh users. This version introduced familiar interface elements: buttons, sliders, menus.

Now musicians could create their own control panels (patches) and share them. This spawned explosive growth in the interactive music community, paving the way for the arrival of live audio processing (MSP) in the late 90s.
