## Summary

Miller Puckette saved musicians from writing code by hand. In Max, programs are created by connecting boxes with patch cords on the screen. Programming became visual.

## Full text

Miller Puckette didn't intend to change music history; he just needed to tame a monster. Tasked with controlling the terrifyingly complex 4X processor at IRCAM, he created a radical solution: a visual interface. Instead of writing lines of cryptic code, composers could connect functional 'objects' with virtual cables, visualizing the flow of data like water in pipes.

This environment, named Max, democratized computer music. It liberated artists from the need to be software engineers, allowing them to build complex, interactive systems that reacted to gestures. Max transformed the computer from a passive playback device into a reactive instrument capable of improvised dialogue on stage.
