# Csound (1986)

AI & Code · https://nodemusic.cc/node/csound

## Summary

Barry Vercoe democratized synthesis. He brought the power of university mainframes to the PC. Now any student could create complex soundscapes simply by writing text code.

## Full text

Csound was a tool for the patient: music was described as text code. Unlike MIDI, it offered infinite precision for those who knew the math, becoming the choice of academic purists willing to pay with time for quality.

In the 80s, working with Csound required Zen-like patience: rendering 30 seconds of complex audio could take all night. Composers would start the calculation, go to sleep, and only find out in the morning that a single digit error had resulted in absolute silence.
