Written by Gerhard Lengeling for the Atari ST, Creator revolutionized the workflow. It combined the best of two worlds: the pattern-based structure of drum machines (blocks A, B, C) and the linear recording of tape. Later, with the addition of a score editor, the software became Notator, and eventually evolved into Emagic Logic (now Apple Logic Pro).

However, Creator earned its cult status not for its interface, but for the hardware. The Atari ST featured built-in MIDI ports soldered directly onto the motherboard. This provided phenomenal rhythmic accuracy ('rock-solid timing') free from the micro-latency (jitter) inherent in modern USB interfaces. This is why many producers obsessed with complex rhythm continued using this 'ancient' software long after powerful PCs emerged, preferring its rigid machine logic to modern DAWs.
